What is Haute Couture?

posted in: Blog | 0

The process of making fitting party gowns is commonly described using this phrase. The word “Haute Couture” is actually used much more exclusively in France.

The name “Haute Couture” can only be used by fashion businesses that adhere to a specific set of criteria. Those are:

  • two independently owned workshops with twenty full-time employees.
  • Each piece of art requires at least 200 hours to complete.
  • The designers are obliged to present two collections each year, one for the day and one for the night, each having at least thirty distinctive items.
  • With limited help from sowing devices, the patterns must be manually produced.
  • The piece must be finished by the person who started it.
